What is a Compact Fluorescent Lamp?

What exactly is a compact fluorescent lamp(CFL), also known as a compact fluorescent light? Wikipedia defines a CFL as "a type of fluorescent lamp. Many CFLs are designed to replace an incandescent lamp and can fit into existing light fixtures formerly used for incandescents."

Compared to incandescent bulbs, CFLs use less energy and last longer. The catch is they cost more. However those savings are recouped in energy cost savings. In the United States, Wikipedia mentions a CFL can save over US $30 in electricity costs over the lamp's life time. Not bad.

"CFLs radiate a different light spectrum from that of incandescent lamps. Improved phosphor formulations have improved the subjective color of the light emitted by CFLs such that the best 'soft white' CFLs are subjectively similar in color to standard incandescent lamps," Wikipedia states.

So try one. I'm sure you'll enjoy the quality of light.
